RIYADH: A Royal Saudi Navy frigate prevented pirates from attacking a Turkish cargo ship near the Gulf of Aden, the Saudi Press Agency (SPA) said. It was the first such operation announced by the Saudi navy.
The frigate, Al-Riyadh, responded to a distress call from the Yasa Seyhan after the ship was attacked by three small boats in international waters near the Gulf of Aden early yesterday, SPA said. “The warship Al-Riyadh, which is in the Gulf of Aden and is part of a multinational force to fight piracy, provided protection to the Turkish merchant ship,” SPA said. “The pirates fled after the arrival of the frigate,” the agency said, adding that the Saudi frigate accompanied the Turkish ship until the danger was over.
Commenting on the operation, Turkish Ambassador Naci Koru said: “Such a rescue mission on the part of the Royal Saudi Navy deserves all appreciation. He thanked the Kingdom and the Saudi naval cadres for “such a heroic effort” and said the operation symbolized the strong cooperation between Saudi Arabia and Turkey on the one hand and among nations of the world on the other.
More than 150 suspected pirates were arrested by naval patrols in the Gulf of Aden in 2008. This year, Danish, Russian and US warships have also detained suspects.
Heavily armed pirates operate high-powered speedboats and sometimes hold ships for weeks before releasing them for large ransoms paid by governments or ship owners.
They have been undeterred by the presence of foreign navies patrolling one of the world’s busiest shipping routes and more than 100 attacks occurred last year alone.
